There is no test of being a “proper woman”
You belong with or without periods, a uterus, children or a wish to become a mother. You can read quietly, choose what fits and keep your story private.
Body and cycle
Understanding the body
The uterus is a muscular pelvic organ lined by the endometrium. The cervix connects it to the vagina. During menstruation, some of that lining is shed. Knowing the names makes it easier to ask questions and describe symptoms. [1]
A cycle without demands
Periods are part of a cycle, not dirt. Many adult cycles last 21–35 days, with bleeding for 2–7 days; adolescent patterns can differ. These are guides, not diagnostic rules. You can privately note dates, pain and changes in how you feel. You do not have to feel different in each phase. [2]
When periods disrupt life
Changing products every 1–2 hours, bleeding beyond a week or pain that interrupts school or work deserves medical advice. Discuss bleeding between periods or after intimacy too. Severe pain is not a duty. [3] Severe or unusually bad pain that usual pain relief does not help needs urgent assessment. [10]
Life stages
For girls and teenagers
First periods: questions are welcome
Pack a pad, spare underwear and a small bag. Ask a trusted adult to explain what is happening. Choose comfortable products and follow their instructions. Tell an adult and clinician about heavy bleeding or severe pain. A first visit can often start with conversation; an internal examination is not automatic. [2][6]
Bring your questions, symptoms and medication list. Ask for each step to be explained and say when something feels uncomfortable. Cervical and breast screening depend on age, risk and local guidance; there is no universal yearly ultrasound or hormone panel here. [6][7][5]
Hot flushes and changes in sleep and cycles can occur. Discuss support when symptoms affect daily life. Any bleeding after 12 months without periods needs checking. Your value does not diminish with age or the end of menstruation. [8]
Learn your usual appearance and feel. About monthly, look in a mirror and gently feel your breasts and armpits without painful pressure. A new lump, skin or nipple pulling inward, or unusual discharge should be checked; these changes do not necessarily mean cancer. [4]
Three gentle practices
What do I need today? · 2 minutes
Sit comfortably and breathe normally. You can simply look around.
Ask: “Do I need rest, movement, food, a conversation or help?”
Choose one manageable action. Rest a hand on a shoulder if you wish; touch is optional.
Agree that speaking, silence and leaving are allowed. Advice is by request.
Take turns: “How am I today? What support would help?”
Keep others’ stories private. Girls need separate age-appropriate gatherings with a responsible adult, without requests for intimate photos or public personal details.
These are invitations to attention, not treatment or ways to alter hormones. Skip any step.
Traditions you can choose
Gatherings, singing, craft and sharing experience can warm a contemporary circle. Here, “Red Tent” is an image for our space, not a claim to one ancient tradition shared by all cultures. Specific customs need a name, origin and source; rituals are optional.
Would you like to share with care?
Gynecologists, women’s health specialists and circle facilitators are welcome. Clinical knowledge, cultural rituals and personal experience will be clearly distinguished. Participant ages and event terms are agreed before any announcement.
General education. Checked 21 October 2026. Discuss screening with a clinician in your country. This page does not collect personal health information.
